Nadine Makarem is a writer based between Beirut and Mount Lebanon who has worked in development and project management with different international and regional agencies for over 10 years. She holds a graduate degree in International Relations and Diplomacy from SOAS University in London, where she also worked as an independent reporter. She is currently the manager of a global education programme that supports Palestinian students and medical residents in pursuing university degrees and fellowships around the world.
Along with two friends, Nadine co-founded SHATR in 2021, a collective that aims to excite, maintain, and nurture the culture of poetry in Beirut, and showcase modes of expression where poetics are given spaces to flourish. In 2024, Shatr released their first album with Ruptured Music available on all streaming platforms.
Nadine resorts to the written word for personal and political expression, exploration, and defiance, and truly relies on poetry for sustenance and grounding. She is published in various journals in Lebanon and abroad, including Discontent Magazine (Palestine, Lebanon, Egypt), Post-Mortem Magazine (France), Rusted Radishes (Lebanon), Dusk: Anthology of Contemporary Lebanese Women Poets (regional), Arab Women Voice New Realities (regional), and more.
